The question whether the transport of the western boundary currents in the subtropics can be accounted for only by the wind stress is examined on the basis of previous works. The seasonal transport variation of the Florida Current in the North Atlantic is probably able to be estimated from the wind stress, while its mean transport cannot be estimated because the thermohaline effect as well as the wind effect is important. In the case of the Kuroshio in the North Pacific, the total eastward transport and its seasonal variation cannot be evaluated only from the wind stress due to eddy activities around the Kuroshio, but the net transport including recirculation and its seasonal variation can be evaluated.
