Clinical response of Keflex, an oral cephalosporin antibiotic, was evaluated in bacillary dysentry to obtain the following results;
1. Keflex was administered to a total of 25 cases of bacillary dysentry, 20 cases of adults and 5 cases of children, on the dosage of 1 g per day for 5 days. All the patients were confirmed to be carriers of Shigella sp. and to have typical clinical symptoms.
2. 25 strains isolated from the patients, mostly those of Shigella sonnei, were all sensitive to cephalexin and the MIC was 6.25 mcg/ml at peak.
3. A good response of Keflex was observed clinically and bacteriologically 25 cases and bacteriological response was 84% within 4 days of therapy, although the relapse of organism was observed in 1 case. Neither side effect nor adverse reaction on clinical laboratory findings was noted.
4. Thus, it is considered that Keflex is an effective antibiotic for the therapy of bacillary dysentry and a further clinical study shall be conducted.
