The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short term outcome of locked plate fixation in proximal humeral fracture. 6 patients (Group A) who underwent open reduction and locked plate fixation with proximal humeral fracture between June, 2007 and January, 2008 were used. There were 2 males and 4 females.
All of group A involved surgical neck 2-part fracture. We compared group A with 8 patients (Group B) who underwent open reduction and conventional plate fixation. All of group B involved surgical neck 2-part fracture. The average age was 62 years old in group A and 70 years old in group B, the average follow-up periods were 11 months and 12 months respectively. There was no significant differences in the age and follow-up periods among the 2 groups. In group A the mean active flexion was 125°, abduction 117°, ER 53°, IR T12 and average JOA score was 86 points. In group B the mean active flexion was 125°, abduction 111°, ER 42°, IR T10 and the average JOA score was 89 points. The average humeral head inclination angle was 131°(mean humerus varus deformity 16°) in group A and 124°(18°) in group B. There was no significant differences in the range of motion, JOA score and humeral head inclination angle among the 2 groups. In both groups all patients showed bone union, however, 1 patient of group A had humeral head necrosis and needed hemiarthoplasty. There was no significant differences in clinical outcomes among the 2 groups, except for 1 patient of humeral head necrosis in the group of locked plate fixation.
