The dental arch, head and face of the Saisiyat tribe one of Taiwan aborigines, were investigated morphologically and anthropologically. The subjects consisted of 41 males and 43 females, 13 to 29 years of age, living in Nanchuang of Miaoli and Wufeng of Hsinchu, in Taiwan. Sex difference, comparison with other races and representative head-face types were examined on the basis of the averages obtained from the measurements of the dental arch, head and face. The results were as follows : I. Dental arch 1. Sex difference For both the upper and lower jaws, males showed significantly greater values in items of width than females. For length, however, no significant difference by sex was seen. In the indices for the lower jaw, some sex difference apparently affected by the items of width was found. 2. Racial difference The Saisiyat tribe showed about the same values in the items of length and width as Atayal tribe. Females in particular showed very similar values for both the upper and lower jaws. Chinese Hoklo, Korean and Japanese tended to show smaller values in these items than the Atayal or Saisiyat tribe. II. Head and Face 1. Sex difference Males showed significantly greater measurements than females in the head breadth, bizygomatic breadth, morphological facial height and stature. However, no significant difference was seen in the head length, bigonial breadth and head height. 2. Morphological classification by index Cephalic index : Brachycephalic or hyperbrachycephalic for both male and female Length-height index : Hypsicephalic for both male and female Breadth-height index : Acrocephalic for female ; no characteristic type for male Morphological facial index : Euryprosopic or leptoprosopic for both male and female The Saisiyat tribe showed the above head-face types.
