Purpose: This research sought to empirically examine the impact of university students’ stereotypes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on their attitudes toward ASD.

Method: The study involved 304 first-year students attending a university focused on health and welfare discipline. The analysis began with a one-sample t-test to assess perceptions of ability and warmth. Next, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was calculated, and a multiple regression analysis was performed using the stepwise method, with different attitude domains serving as the dependent variable and various factors as the independent variable.

Results: The findings from a one-sample t-test indicated that the stereotype of people with ASD is “Moderate competence and High warmth”. The multiple regression analysis revealed that these stereotypes significantly and positively influenced aspects such as “practical goodwill”, “affirmation of ability”, “community integration”, and “ideological goodwill”.

Conclusion: The study demonstrated that the impact of stereotypes held by individuals remains significant, even when considering factors like knowledge and experience with contact. The findings suggest that stereotypes held by university students majoring in medical, health, and welfare fields about individuals with ASD might lead to varied attitudes toward assisting.
