Aluminum alloy sheets have recently made the transition to structural materials in means of transport such as airplane, railroad coach and automobile. Success in cold forming of these sheets depends highly on several important material behaviors and the development of quantitative, predictive understandings of these behaviors. Discussion on plastic instability and FLD is base on in-plane deformation unless stated otherwise. Practical press forming involves always out-of-plane deformation to some extent. The difference between with/without bending effect should be examined in detail. In the present study, in-plane and out-of-plane deformation to ductile failure was studied on commercially available A5052 sheets. Strain path, strain ratio and the FLD curves obtained from these processes were compared. The significant information obtained on basic plastic behavior can predict the cold formability of the material.
