Enhancement of the heat transfer in a narrow flow passage is studied experimentally in order to utilize effectively thermal energy in a wide temperature field by using porous plates as a turbulence promoter. In the first stage, the characteristics of heat transfer and flow situation on a smooth heated surface, opposite the porous-type turbulence promoter on the insulated wall, were experimentally determined by flowing air through a parallel plate duct. Experimental results concerning the local heat transfer characteristics, the effects of the porous diameter and thickness of porous-type turbulence promoter, the correspondence between heat transfer and flow situation, and the thermal performance are discussed.
