Numerical analysis using the piecewise-linear-method (PLM) was carried out for the propagation of shock waves in a straight duct with a discontinuous area change. Concerning the appearance of reflected shock waves, two regimes were treated here : one is the regime where a shock wave reflects form the area-changed part, another is the regime which is called "region of ambiguity". In the investigation of both regimes, computer Schlieren technique was employed to visualize transmitted and reflected shock waves. From the computer Schlieren pictures and three-dimensional pressure distributions, the behavior of shock waves traveling through the area-changed part of a duct is discussed.
