Piston slap phenomena in diesel engines were numerically studied by a method which can deal with pistons and cylinders with arbitrary profiles. The effects of gudgeon pin offset and engine speed were discussed. The results showed that offsetting the gudgeon pin to the thrust side by a certain amount has an apparent advantage in reducing piston slap impacts. Such impacts are much severer at lower engine speeds, as often noticed in idling.
