A new accumulation-type fuel injection system was developed to improve the combustion characteristics of small-sized, direct-injection-type diesel engines. The following were made clear through the experiments. (1) Injection characteristic could be easily controlled compared with the conventional Bosch system. (2) Injection pressure could be kept at a high value independently of engine speed, and exhaust smoke density was sharply improved even at low engine speeds. Moreover, the results of theoretical calculations showed the possibility of further improvement of injection characteristics by excluding the influences of pressure wave, arranging the accumulator and control valves close to the injection nozzle.
