Abstract
This paper reports a series of experimental studies on magnetic fluid behavior in laterally vibrated rectangular and cylindrical containers subject to magnetic fields. Some effects of applied magnetic fields on the magnetic fluid surface responses in a rectangular container, and the disappearance of magnetic drops formed by surface disintegration in a cylindrical container subject to horizontal vibration are investigated. It was found that the respondent amplitude of magnetic fluid motions decreased with the magnetic field intensity, and that the resonant frequency depended upon the magnetic field intensity. The number of floating drops induced by vibrating the cylindrical container laterally with the natural frequency of the fluid-container system, decreased steeply with the magnetic field intensity. It was also observed that the pressure responses depended on the magnetic field intensity.
