This report proposes the use of an optical probe to observe the particle behavior related to the rate of heat transfer in the freeboard region, and discusses the relationship between the heat transfer rate and the particle behavior in the expanded bed. This probe has two rods; one is a light-emitting diode (LED) used as a light source, and the other is a photocell. Measurements were carried out for a variety of optical probe locations and superficial gas velocities. The optical method for observing the particle behavior seems remarkably useful. It seems that the particle activity is dependent not only on the superficial gas velocity but also on the tube arrangement.
