In order to establish a theoretical method to obtain an optimized head to media interface condition for a high density contact recording micro floppy disk, the fundamental dynamic characteristics of a 3.5 inch flexible disk are investigated theoretically and experimentally. Eigenvalues and modes in transverse deflection of a spinning flexible disk induced by static and dynamic concentrated force are first analyzed, taking account of the effect of circumferential initial negative stress. The dynamic deflection characteristics of an actual micro floppy disk due to a point contact head are next analyzed taking the initial deflection and initial stress in the disk into consideration. It is found from experiments that the dynamic behaviors of a spinning floppy disk can be quantitatively predicted by theory, if one takes account of the initial deflection and initial negative stress in the disk.
