The layer arrangements of planar six-bar crank mechanisms with only revolute pairs, namely the arrangements of links to parallel planes such as to avoid mutual interferences of the moving links are discussed with consideration of the displacement characteristics of the mechanisms. The types of mechanisms that cannot be constructed as crank mechanisms only by arrangements of each link to parallel planes are listed. For such mechanisms, pairs on the same link are proposed to be arranged on different layers. The minimum numbers of layers required to construct crank mechanisms are investigated, and the numbers are applied to classify the types of the six-bar crank mechanisms.
