The authors formulate the coupled vibration between wheels and a rail in the horizontal direction, introducing Kalker's linear creepage theorem as the rolling contact model between wheel and rail. Consequently, they obtain the algebraic simultaneous equations with respect to the contact forces and contact moments. The steady-state responses of the wheels and the rail in the coupled vibration to the irregularity of the head of the rail in the horizontal direction are decided from the solutions of the small scaled simultaneous equations. In additions, they present theoretical and experimental considerations for the individual characteristics of a rotating wheel. Both results agree well with each other but for the effect of imperfectness of the wheel.
