This paper deals with the investigation of the influence of the chatter noise generated when a cylindrical workpiece is machined with a single point cutting tool. Two typical patterns are observed under the process of transfering cutting noise to chatter noise. One pattern is that the sound pressure level has suddenly risen, and another is that the sound pressure level has gradually risen. In spite of the cutting conditions, the contribution rate indicates 90100% when chatter marks are observed. Furthermore, a relation between the cutting noise and surface conditions of the workpiece in the situation of the chatter is found. The roughness and confusion rate of the roughness increased with an increase of the sound pressure level.
