A method to estimate the axial force acting a clamped uniform beam by measuring its natural frequencies is proposed. The symmetrically clamped end is modeled by two springs restraing rotation and lateral motion of the beam end. The axial force and two springconstants are estimated from the values of three natural frequencies up to third order. The method was applied to a demonstrative experimental model and fairly good results were obtained. For small clamping stiffness, however, the accuracy in the estimation decreases.
