In order to clarify the hunting stability of railway trucks, a rolling stock test apparatus has been constructed. Several kinds of high speed trucks have been tested in the course of development of an advanced Shinkansen truck. A detailed description of the test procedure, typical test results, and the correlation with linear/nonlinear analysis is provided in the present paper. Through the experimental and analytical study, it has been clarified that we can properly investigate truck hunting behaviour by using this apparatus and that the nonlinear analysis can give a quantitative explanation .
