An approach for simultaneous optimum design of the structure and control system is proposed. The control system comprises small-order output feedback. The objective function is expressed by both structural mass and performance index with respect to output. The design variables of both the thicknesses of the finite-element model and the elements of the output feedback gain matrix are simultaneously optimized by the complex method. The complex method does not use the derivatives of the objective function, so the algorithm of the search procedure is simple and can be applied to discontinuous objective functions such as in the present problem. This paper shows that the proposed method can be applied to the optimization of noncollocated systems and is particularly applicable when colored noise disturbances act on the system.
