The authors designed and constructed a gear train testing machine which can test the component planetary gear trains used in an automatic transmission of a passenger car with four kinds of speed stages. In one of the speed stages, planetary gears are used as gear coupling and no speed change occurs. Power transmission efficiencies of three kinds of component gear trains were measured by changing the kinds of lubricating oils, the profile contact ratio, the rotational speed and the tooth surface finish. The calculated efficiencies agree well with the measured ones when oil churning and bearing losses are taken into account together with tooth meshing losses. In this calculation, it is assumed that μ=0.08 for the friction coefficient between the teeth and that μ=0.010 for the friction coefficient of needle bearings of the planetary gears.
