For the design of continuous bulk handling equipment, it is important to estimate the digging resistance exactly especially in side cutting. In this report, the digging resistance of ore in side cutting has been studied from experiments using a full -scale testing machine. Then, both front digging resistance and lateral digging resistance were examined. The main conclusions obtained are as follows : ( 1 ) The front digging resistance is a function of the bulldozing area. ( 2 ) The lateral digging resistance is a function of the bulldozing area and side slip angle of the bucket. ( 3 ) Although the ratio of the lateral digging resistance to the front digging resistance for each average value is about 0.4, the ratio for each maximum value reaches about 0.7. These results should be considered in designing continuous bulk handling equipment.
