Ka’i 花彙 (1759–65), an illustrated botanical book written in collaboration
by Shimada Mitsufusa 島田充房 (?–1782) and Ono Ranzan 小野蘭山 (1729–
1810), is outstanding among similar works published in the Edo period. The
eight volumes contain a total of 200 plants, 100 herbs and 100 trees, and
each illustration is accompanied by a Japanese explanation. Of the two
authors, however, Ono Ranzan is so well-known as a herbalist that little
attention has been paid to the other, Shimada Mitsufusa. Yet while overshadowed,
it was Mitsufusa who originally planned the book and was also
its publisher.
