As a fundamental information on the photochemical conversion of the [3n]cyclophanes (n=2-6) to the propella [3n]prismanes, we also studied the spectroscopic properties of the [3n]cyclophanes (CPs) (n=2-6) and elucidated the fluorescence and phosphorescence spectral properties including their life-times. We wish to present the latest results of photochemistry and photophysical properties of [3n]CPs. In our challenging objective to synthesize propella[3n]prismanes (n=3-6), we have studied the photochemical reaction of the [3n]CPs (n=2-6). Furthermore, nanosecond laser flash photolysis was examined by using an YAG laser at 266 nm to study the excited state property of the [3n]CPs. According to the results of these measurements, the photochemical and photophysical processes of the [3n]CPs have become clear. Based on the experimental results so far obtained and theoretical considerations, suitable cyclophanes for the photochemical precursors were proposed. We also report here our efforts along this line.
