In Iwate Prefecture, seasonal prevalence of the yellow dung fly, Scatophaga stercoraria L., adults was of a clearly bimodal type with peaks at mid May and mid October although more males were caught on cow dung and more female in mosquito-net traps. Under semi-outdoor conditions, the overwintering pupae sporadically emerged into adults during a mild winter, but the majority of them came to emergence in spring with a peak in late April. Incubation of the pupae collected from a pasture in early February showed that the period of emergence was not influenced by photoperiod but apparently determined by effective temp-erature.
