Black root rot of carrot, which was characterized by dark, ellipsoidal and somewhat sunken lesions on toproots, was recorded from Aomori Prifecture, northern-Honshu, Japan (Kuwata et al. 1983). The causal fungus had provisionally been identified as Scytalidium sp. because no conidial state, was confirmed. Recently the conidial state was found on both artificial media and lesions of naturally infected roots. Conidia were obclavate-acicular, elogate, straight or curved, 110-250×6-12μm, 6-12 septate, hyaline or sometimes pald-brown, smooth and usually with a basal appendage. Pathogenicity to leaves, stems and roots of carrot was confirmed with inoculation of conidial suspension. Conidial state of the causal fungus was identified as Mycocentrospora acerina (Hartig) Deighton.
