In survival study, most of the new born aphids of Aulacorthum solani which were reared on kidney bean leaves (Phaseolus vulgaris) died by the 3rd instar. Mortality in early instars, however, was different among the cultivars. Aphids were trapped physically by trichomes, especially in the 1st instar. Few of the grown aphids were miniaturized and died by starvation. From scanning electron microscope observation, the point of trichome showed that the hook structure and the degree of hook forms were different among the cultivars. The hook forms were closely related with the aphids mortality of the cultivar, and a strongly hooked cultivar showed high mortality in early instar aphids.
