In 1993, a bacterial disease indicated as leaf spot and shoot rot was detected on lilac in Hokkaido prefecture. The symptoms were expressed with necrotic spots with halo on leaves and blackish lesions on young shoots. The bacterium isolated from diseased plants was pathogenic to lilac by artificial inoculation. The causal organism produced fluorescent pigment on King's B medium, and belonged to the group I a from LOPAT reaction. The bacterium hydrolysed gelatin, esculin and arbutin, and used xylose, sucrose, erythritol, inositol, mannitol, sorbitol, gluconic acid, quinic acid, betaine and trigonelline as sole carbon sources. Thus, the bacterium causing the disease was identified as Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae. The present report is the first record of bacterial blight disease of lilac in Hokkaido prefecture.
