The phenology of the emergence of Pandemis heparana larvae from their hibernaculum was examined in an apple orchard in Aomori Prefecture. The larval emergence occurred from mid-April to early May. Such emergence was most frequent during the end of April, corresponding to the “half-inch green” in the bud stage of apple trees. The overwintering larvae collected from their hibernaculum were determined to be in the second instar by measuring their head capsule width. These results are discussed with regard to the control of P. heparana in apple orchards.
