Abstract

An attempt was made to treat recurrence of primary lung cancer at the primary site (left upper lobe, S1+2c) in an elderly patient who had previously been treated by fractionated X-ray irradiation.
After dermal incision, we carried out intraoperative electron beam irra-diation two times at respective doses to the disease focus of 40 Gray and 60 Gray. The effect of this treatment proved superior to that of the previous treatment and the symptoms remain palliated for a longer period of time.
Also, in the right upper lobe which received a single dose of 60 Gray, the S2b metastatic site became fibrotic and disappeared. The side-effects due to massive electron beam irradiation were slight. Ouing to both its efficacy and safety, this method seems likely to be a curative therapeutic modality for treating small, localized peripheral lung cancers.
