Abstract
The gastric secretion was studied in dogs with Heidenhain gastric pouch by administration. of hypothalamic lipoid extract. An intramuscular injection of the extract to intact dogs produced a significant increase in gastric acidity and pepsin value after 3 hours, reaching a maximum at 6 hours and then gradually declined to control level. This gastric secretory response was closely similar to that following intramuscular injection of ACTH. The gastric secretory response to the extract was perfectly inhibited by pituitary stalk section, hypophysectomy and adrenalectomy. While the gastric secretory response to ACTH was inhibited by adrenalectomy, but was not inhibited by pituitary stalk section and hypophysectomy. Paper-chromatographically it was revealed that the hypothalamic lipoid extract was different substance from ACTH in chemical composition. It can consequently be assumed that the gastric secretion was induced humorally by the extract which stimulate the adenohypophysis to re-lease ACTH giving an effect on the adrenal cortex. The effective factor of this extract was found in lipid portion of the hypothalamus, but was not found in extract from the cerebral. cortex.
