In order to determine the relationship between salt intak and plasma renin activity (PRA) on epidemiological basis, 519 residents, older than 40 years, were studied in Ueno Village in Gunma Prefecture.
The mean salt intake was 13.7±5.8g/day in males and 12.8±4.6g/day in females, while the mean PRA in normotensive males and females were 2.16 ± 1.93ng/ml/h and 1.73 ±1.77ng/ml/h, respectively.
A significant negative correlation was obtained between salt intake and PRA both in normotensive males and females, but not in hypertensives. From this negative correlation line, some hypertensives were classifed as low and high renin groups, i.e. their PRA level were more than standard error of estimate.
Then, the aggravated changes of findings in ECG, eyeground and urine were compared between low and high renin hypertensive groups during past 10 years. But, no significant difference was observed between these two groups.
