Abstract
Ionic liquid crystals having a piperidinium skeleton were synthesized and their thermal properties were examined. The ionic liquid crystal having a quaternary ammonium unit showed glass-smectic A phase and smectic A-isotropic phase transitions. Also, the ionic liquid crystals having a tertiary ammonium unit exhibited smectic A and glass phases. In the glass phases, the smectic A orientational structures remained unaltered on cooling from the smectic A phase. The formation of the glass state in the liquid crystals is due to aggregation of the ion units through the Coulomb force.
