Experiments were carried out to find simplified diets for obtaining the 4th and 5th instar larvae of the rice stem borer under aceptic condition. Two kinds of diet were made and tested. The first was composed of one part of wheat bran and about three parts of water in weight. In the second, ascorbic acid of 1 to 10 mg per gram of wheat bran was added. These were autoclaved in flask. Larvae grew well and pupated normally on both diets under aceptic condition but some individuals failed to emerge. Hatching potency of egg masses laid by females reared on these diets was not entirely satisfactory, but some ones hatched normally. Egg masses laid by females reared on the diet supplemented with ascorbic acid showed higher hatchability than those laid by females reared on the first diet.
