In August 1965 the writer witnessed a pairing between a female Papilio maackii and a male Papilio bianor at a point about 1,200m above sea level near Mt. Amari, Yamanashi Prefecture. After the butterflies parted they were collected separately, and the female, then very fresh, was later entrusted to an LSJ member for egg-laying. The female laid altogether about 130 eggs on Phellodendron amurense, but only one of them produced a larva, the rest either rotting or shrinking. The larva, more like that of P. maackii than to P. bianor in outlook, grew until after the fourth moult. However, its growth stopped soon afterwards and died. As Dr. S. A. Ae (Tyo to Ga, Vol, XII, Pt. 4, 1961) has indicated, the hatchability of eggs and the vitality of hybrid larvae seem to be poor between these two species, no matter how the hybridizing pairing may be effected either artificially or spontaneously.
