A beak-marked butterfly of Melanitis phedima (Lepidoptera, Satyridae) of autumn morph was recorded in Toshima-ku, Tokyo. The characters of beak-marked wings were described. It was thought that the butterfly could escape from the bird not because of eye spots on the wings but because of the wing being large enough for the beak of the bird not to reach the body of the butterfly.
