Interspecific hybridization between Brenthis daphne and B. ino was carried out by placing pairs in cages, and the F1 hybrids were back crossed. Growth of larvae and the morphology and sexual ratio of adults were normal. Both male and female adults were able to reproduce. Naturally occurring hybrids were identified in surveys of two areas in Nagano Prefecture in central Japan where both species occur. Individuals thought to be natural hybrids were collected as larvae from these areas. Although these species are recognized as being distinct species, these findings show that there is genetic introgression.
