In recent years, the rate of refusing the Saibanin system in Japan has been increasing. Although many Saibanin have had “good experiences” with such a system, their experiences have not been effectively shared with the public. Thus, based on ethnographical recordings and interviews with Saibanin, this paper examines their “good experiences” in more detail. Based on the findings, the following four process were revealed: 1) Saibanin were surprised and confused when they were elected; 2) they could not adapt to trial and judicial decision; 3) they discussed with other members and overcome it; and 4) they eventually considered the overall process a “good experience.”
