An inexpensive and portable gas photoacoustic monitoring system using a near-infrared diode laser was developed and tested. High sensitivity was achieved by a resonant-type photoacoustic cell with short optical path length. The minimum detectable acetylene concetration was about 100 ppbV (at atmospheric pressure), which corresponds to a minimum detectable absorption coefficient of approximately 1.1 × 10-8 cm-1. Photacoustic excitation and noise spectrums were also investigated.
