Liquid crystal spatial modulators are one of the essential devices for information optics such as 3D
displays, information processing and holographic data storage. In this review, several techniques to
achieve high-speed drive of liquid crystal devices and their characteristics are described. Then we
introduce a new ferroelectric liquid crystal on silicon device (F-LCOS). This binary device has 2K×2K
pixels with a frame rate of 5,000/sec.
