Desirable control of optical properties in materials using artificial structures have been explored for decades since the development of nano- and micro fabrication techniques. While photonic crystals and plasmonics are the examples of such an approach, new concepts for designing the optically functional structures are recently arising to show remarkable optical properties that were not accessible before. In this special issue, recent advancements in these new artificial optical materials ranging from topological photonics to exotic phase change materials are reviewed, focusing on their designing strategy and applications.
