The effect of pre-excitation by laser pulses on the reflectivity of the phase-conjugated signal from CdSxSe1-x doped glass was examined. It was found that the reflectivity decreased in an oscillatory manner with irradiation time. We found, however, that the second-power law of re-flectivity vs. pump intensity is valid even at high pump intensity, if the reflectivity of freshly ex-posed glass is used. Thus we were able to determine the third-order nonlinear susceptibility, X (3), by plotting the reflectivity versus the pump intensity.
