Abstract
The purpose of this study is to clarify research trends concerning “ reasonable
accommodation ” in Japan. The subjects were academic papers published in CiNii
Research whose titles included “reasonable accommodation.” AI text mining was used
for analysis, and statistical comparisons of word occurrence ratios were performed.
Academic publications containing “reasonable accommodation” in their titles were
observed starting in 2002. The number peaked in 2016, declined through 2021, and
showed a slight increase through 2024.
First, the peak in academic publications in 2016 was considered related to the
enactment and implementation of the Act on the Elimination of Discrimination against
Persons with Disabilities. Next, the decline in academic publications from 2016 to 2021
was considered related to a shift in focus from legal frameworks to practical reports, as
well as the fact that some aspects of traditional reasonable accommodations had
become more commonplace. The increase in academic presentations toward 2024 was
thought to be due to renewed attention on “reasonable accommodations” following
amendments to the Act on the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with
Disabilities.
Academic presentations with “ reasonable accommodations ” in their titles were
thought to fluctuate in tandem with legal developments, subsequently shifting toward
reports on practical implementation.
