1. H. pertussis Tohama variant as well as strain No. 29 demonstrate positive capsule staining similar to that of Phase I strain, while Phase III strain does nottake the stain. 2. Electronmicroscopic studies show no significant differences of structure among these strains of H pertussis. 3. All these variants and the Phase I strain produce sensitization to histamine in mice.
