Comparing 15 strains of Salmonella pullorum and 11 strains of Salmonella gallinarum in nutritional requirements the following results were obtained.
1. Three strains of S. pullorum and 6 strains of S. gallinarum did not require any growth factors, but of the other strains, a combination of 3 vitamins-niacin, thiamine and riboflavin-was necessary for growth.
2. By an elimination test a medium containing 7 amino acids-glycine, asparagine, glutamic acid, proline, cystine, arginine and tryptophan-was found to support a moderate growth of all tested strains.
3. S. pullorum is more exacting than S. gallinarum in both growth factor and amino acid requirement (proline, glutamic acid and cystine).
