Gas Phase Chemistry of Novel Cation Radicals with Carbene-Type Structures

The generation and characterization of the novel radical ion/dipole complexes Y₂C-XH⁺ are described, and special attention is paid to some of their unusual properties which include collision induced dissociations, enthalpies of formation, charge and spin distribution, bonding properties and barriers of isomerization via 1,2-hydrogen migration, respectively. The potential role of the radical ion/dipole complexes as central intermediates in the interstellar genesis of organic molecules is discussed.
