In order to determine the effect of addition of selenium and tellurium on the activity coefficient of oxygen, γo, in liquid copper at 1373 K, the modified coulometric titrations described previously have been performed by using an electrochemical cell: O in liquid Cu–Se or Cu–Te solutions/ZrO2(+CaO)/Air, Pt.
The γo value for liquid copper is linearly lowered by the addition of those elements up to NSe=0.02 and NTe=0.03, although the Se–O and Te–O bonds are likely to be weaker than the Cu–O bond. The interaction parameters of selenium and tellurium to oxygen are evaluated from the data to be −13.8 and −16.2 at 1373 K.
