Human ATP-binding cassette transporter C11 (ABCC11, also known as multidrug-resistance associated protein 8: MRP8) is a membrane protein that functions as an ATP-dependent efflux pump for amphipathic anions, including endogenous substances such as cyclic nucleotides, steroid sulfates, and glutathione conjugates, as well as certain drugs. While further studies are required for the physiological role of ABCC11, accumulating evidence indicates that a single nucleotide polymorphism in ABCC11—c.538G›A (p.Gly180Arg)—is a determinant for apocrine glands-related phenotypes, including earwax type and the risk of axillary osmidrosis. We herein provide an overview on the genotype-phenotype associations, along with recent progresses in the ABCC11 research.
