Abstract
We gave a correct statistical mechanical description of the solubilized aggregates of solubilizates by solubilizers. We showed the following : the conventional use of the mole fraction for the translational entropy of solubilized aggregates leads unphysical result that is due to the breakdown of the conservation of degrees of freedom. By the statistical mechanics that correctly takes into account of the degrees of freedom, we obtained a correct form of the free energy of solubilized aggregates by solubilizers. The theory was applied to the quantitative analysis of the binding isotherm of the protein (Omp F) by the surfactant (octylglucoside) and obtained the reasonably good coincidence between the theory and the measured data.
