A quarter of century has passed since the fluid mosaic model was proposed by Singer and Nicolson. The model has exerted a strong influence on studies in biological sciences. New techniques introduced into biological research, e.g. X-ray diffraction, spin label, differential scanning calorimetry and freezefractured electron microscopy, have contributed to the model.
