The vertical activities of Ixodes nipponensis adults kept in the laboratory (laboratory group ; 24℃, 16L-8D photoperiod) and outdoors (outdoor group) after they had molted (July 2000) were observed in plastic cylinders which were placed outdoors. The adults of the outdoor group began to commence their activity from November 2000 and then showed high activity from March to June 2001. However, the activity of the adults in the laboratory group was rarely observed from March to June 2001. These results suggest that the behavioral diapause of the outdoor group begins to terminate in late autumn, but that of the laboratory group does not, even in the following spring. Thus, the behavioral diapause of I. nipponensis adults is not terminated with prolonged time after molting or by exposure to a long-day photoperiod (16L-8D). The behavioral diapause of I. nipponensis adults may be terminated by exposure to medium-day or short-day photoperiods.
